By Brandon Bloom

If you have children you know that they can just play all day. Some people have a special room designed just for their child or children to play. This is the room where the child would spend most of the day. If you are thinking about making a room like this for your baby there are many things you have to do. The first and foremost is to make the room childproof. This means making it safe. Then you can start thinking about colors and decorations.

You can make a room safe using safety plugs for the electrical sockets. Small children seem to be interested in these sockets and manage to stick things inside them including their tiny fingers. This is the first safety precaution. The next thing to make a child’s room safer is to ad lots of cushioning everywhere there is a corner. You can put padding along where ever there are edges that you child can fall on. Anyone with a child will know how clumsy children can be. Wall to wall carper or a large rug would be perfect for the floor.

After you have made the room safe you can then start out with the walls and windows. You can decorate the walls with wall paper, paint or pictures. Most people would use educational decoration and some might just use cartoons.

The window of the child’s room should be covered using insulated or heavy curtains. This is to protect the child from extreme sunlight in the summer and cold drafts in the winter. Kids love different colors so if you want to make your child happy in the play room a good choice would be rainbow colors.

Window blinds can also be used if the room does not get enough sunlight in the summer. Just make sure the blinds are not long enough for your child to reach because your child can get hurt.

Never use drapes or curtains that your child can pull or hang on. It would be best to use window dressing that would reach the bottom of the window sill.

If you are decorating child’s play rooms think about how to make it safe before decorating it. One of the safe things to do is prevent harmful sun rays to come in. Curtains should be carefully chosen. These curtains could be the most decorative feature in the room. In a room that is very safe your child will have many happy hours in the play room and you wouldn’t have to worry if you needed to go answer the phone or check on the food in the kitchen.

Opting to make your own valance treatment will not only allow you to dress up your windows for less but it will also help you to do something worthwhile. Making one is fairly a simple and straightforward task. And the only investment that you’ll need is time.

To help you successfully accomplish the task, here is a general guide on how to make an attractive window valance on your own:

Step #1: Make sure to get the actual measurement of your window

This is a very important step to ensure a correct fit, and to determine the desirable length of your window treatment. Use a tape measure to obtain precise window measurements. Put extra allowance depending on how long you want to extend the curtain rod. Since windows vary in size, even ones that appear similar so it is important that you size your all of your windows correctly.

Step #2: Size, mark, and cut the fabric

After acquiring the measurements, you may now begin laying out the pattern on the fabric. To do that, lay the fabric, front facing down, on a flat and even surface. Then, mark the desired length and width of the window treatment with the use of a fabric chalk. If you are using heavy fabrics to create your window valances, you should double the width measurement to allow fullness. Meanwhile, if you are using light fabrics, and want to create a gathered look, you should triple the fabric’s width measurement. As for the length of the fabric, add one inch for the seams and a few inches for the desired heading height above the curtain rod. Once done, cut the fabric according to the marked measurements.

Step #3: Begin sewing the fabric

After cutting the fabric to the desired measurements, you may now begin sewing it according to the style and design that you have in mind. Be sure to follow the sewing lines that you have marked to ensure that the finished product will perfectly fit on your window.

Valances add great accenting to curtains. They can also be used alone as window accents.
