The window scarf valance can give any window or window decor a touch of flair. There are many different colors, fabrics and textures to choose from. They can be used with many types of window coverings, such as drapery panels, blinds, shades and even by themselves. They can also be paired with others of the same or a different color, for a more interesting look. You can create many different looks or styles with window scarf valances, though they are mostly made in the same shape and length. The greatest advantage to using this type of window treatment or accent, is that it can go from classic to contemporary with a few tucks or twists.

For a classic look, the scarf window valance can be draped over the ends of the drapery rods with a large scallop in the middle. It can also be draped over the rod several times, for a more stylized effect. The advantage is that you are not limited to one style placement. Pairing this window treatment with sheer panels provides a rich look.

It also dresses up blinds and plain shades. For room decor with a variety of fabrics and textures, the scarf valance window treatment is also available in textured fabric. This can enhance the look of plain drapery panels and draw more attention to the windows, if desired.

Though scarf window valances are designed as window accents, they can also become the focal point of the window treatment. Many people choose to place them with one end longer than the other, to help draw attention to a specific room location, or to make the room look a bit larger. Another option is to drape the scarf over both ends of the rod, letting one side fall down naturally across the window on an angle, to form a triangular pattern. This can be softened with several waves or scallops, by creating or using a drapery tie of soft fabric on the wider side of the scarf.

The sheer window scarf valance is wonderful for layering color. It provides an additional color accent, when used with drapes or other window treatments in a coordinating color. It may also be used to give draperies and darker shade or tone. When used by themselves, the scarves can be combined with others in similar or coordinating colors, to provide a richer, more layered look. There is no trick to using the window scarf valance properly. It is a matter of taste and style. You can experiment with this type of window accent to create your own style as well.

By Rod Macbeth

Creating window valances on your own is a great way to make good use of your time. This is a perfect opportunity for those looking for a nice way to spruce up the look of their windows without spending much. Opting to make your own valance treatment will not only allow you to dress up your windows for less but it will also help you to do something worthwhile. Making one is fairly a simple and straightforward task. And the only investment that you’ll need is time.

To help you successfully accomplish the task, here is a general guide on how to make an attractive window valance on your own:

Step #1: Make sure to get the actual measurement of your window

This is a very important step to ensure a correct fit, and to determine the desirable length of your window treatment. Use a tape measure to obtain precise window measurements. Put extra allowance depending on how long you want to extend the curtain rod. Since windows vary in size, even ones that appear similar so it is important that you size your all of your windows correctly.

Step #2: Size, mark, and cut the fabric

After acquiring the measurements, you may now begin laying out the pattern on the fabric. To do that, lay the fabric, front facing down, on a flat and even surface. Then, mark the desired length and width of the window treatment with the use of a fabric chalk. If you are using heavy fabrics to create your window valances, you should double the width measurement to allow fullness. Meanwhile, if you are using light fabrics, and want to create a gathered look, you should triple the fabric’s width measurement. As for the length of the fabric, add one inch for the seams and a few inches for the desired heading height above the curtain rod. Once done, cut the fabric according to the marked measurements.

Step #3: Begin sewing the fabric

After cutting the fabric to the desired measurements, you may now begin sewing it according to the style and design that you have in mind. Be sure to follow the sewing lines that you have marked to ensure that the finished product will perfectly fit on your window.

Valances add great accenting to curtains. They can also be used alone as window accents.
